A loanword in English Language Teaching (ELT) refers to a word adopted from another language without significant modification. In English, loanwords enrich the vocabulary by bringing in new concepts, often related to culture, technology, or cuisine. For instance, Hindi has contributed words like “bungalow,” “pyjama,” and “shampoo.” Similarly, Spanish and Portuguese loanwords include “patio,” “burrito,” and “piano” from Spanish, and “marmalade,” “cacao,” and “banana” from Portuguese. These words illustrate the linguistic and cultural exchanges that occur as languages evolve and interact.
